War in Gaza: Israel defeat, Palestine bitter victory.
Israel elections: a failed democracy
Now at the end of the war and in an election day every party is trying to quantified his loses, his gains and what they have achieved during the military and political operation. As usually every party is claiming total victory and presents everything as a total annihilation of the enemy. As usually the truth is very far from these claims. So who win the war in Gaza?
Israel moral defeat.
Israel defeat is a very clear one. First of all, morally, Israel is in a state of isolation and confronted with such an international condemnation without equal since the invasion of Lebanon in 1981. Israel was firmly condemned as an aggressor by the General Assembly of United Nation, the highest moral tribunal of the world, in very strong words: ˝ the urgency of our commitment to end this slaughter”. Slaughter, this is the name under which the UN highest assembly described Israel actions in Gaza. The president of the General Assembly, Miguel d`Escoto Brockmann, was also very clear in defining the situation in Gaza: ˝ Gaza is ablaze. It has been turned into a burning hell,” “The violations of international law inherent in the Gaza assault have been well documented: collective punishment; disproportionate military force; attacks on civilian targets, including homes, mosques, universities, schools˝. If we add to this the strong condemnation from the International Red Cross , Red Crescent, United Nations Relief Agency, all this organizations had repeatedly issued statement, complaints, press declaration condemning Israel for targeting the UN buildings, opening fire on Red Cross or Red Crescent convoys, targeting civilian buildings ( homes, private institution, television , radio station, mosques etc), using white phosphorus on cities ( fragrant violation of international convention on armament ),indiscriminant bombings, targeting of civilian infrastructure . All this are facts that are under International Criminal Court are parts of the crimes of genocide, crimes of war and crimes against humanity. This is for the first time in Israel history when there is an international consensus that the action in Gaza is opposable by international law and all the Israeli leaders are in defiance of international law.
Israel international isolation.
To the unprecedented international condemnation we must add the diplomatic condemnation of Israel, countries like Bolivia, Venezuela, Mauretania, Qatar had sever all ties with Israel as an aggressive member of international community. Other countries had expelled the Israeli’s ambassadors and in many countries had began a concentrated move to boycott all Israeli’s business and connection and suppressed all the military and information ties whit Israel while this state is in contempt with international law. The moment when Israel has proven that is not yet able to be a responsible member of the international community was the complete disregard of United Nation Security Council Resolution 1860 that requested Israel to stop the illegal military action in Gaza, to withdraw the military forces and to open the borders ending the illegal blockade of Gaza strait. If we add to this the using of chemical weapons , weapon experiments in Gaza and the catastrophic humanitarian crisis unlashed in Gaza by Israel aggression we understand why this isolation is not going to go away easy. Also we must not forget that ten`s of millions of people from London to Paris, from Algiers to Cairo, are a real power. The international sympathy was the factor that allows Israel to growth strong and survive; now this international sympathy is wearing thin. The power that made Israel is more and more close to Palestine suffering.
Israel: the end of a democracy.
A long time Israel was praised by the media as the only democracy in the Middle East, as the symbol of democracy in the region. Now this evaluation must be severely questioned. During the war in Gaza an important numbers of Israelis and Arab Israeli’s where arrested, questioned by police and put under supervision to stop them protest to the war. Are these the facts of a functional democracy? Also the Prime Minister Ehud Olmert repeatedly praised the so called home front stability suggesting that the country is a battle line and liberties must be put aside. Are these the facts of a democracy? Also the strong media manipulation, the censorship in Gaza and Israel, the using of military embedded reporters, the crack down on independent media, the close of the Gaza strip to foreign journalists, using patriotic and chauvinistic slogans to united Israel under a policy of war. Are these the facts of a democracy? A proven corrupt prime minister, forced to resign is left to use the military forces for his own party agenda and for winning the elections. This is more close to a dictatorship like the Argentine dictators that used the Falkland war to survive or Mussolini war on Ethiopia. Only dictatorship are using censorship , arrests, chauvinistic manipulation of press and military action to win so called democratic elections. Now Israel is a failed democracy, manipulated and corrupted that is a threat to the Middle East stability. To reconstruct Israel democracy is an international and regional urgency in order to preempt aggression war like this Gaza war. Human Rights Watch, a prominent prodemocracy group already ask for the new US president Barrack Obama to suspend aid to Israel until this country is not proving to abide the international democracy standards.
This is the state in which Israel is finding himself today : isolated, diplomatic pariah of international society, condemned by all major international organization, condemned by the greatest power of XXI century : power of the people and with a failed democracy and a corrupt society easy to be manipulated on aggressive wars.
Israel – 2009 failed election
The real test of how democratic is Israel was the 10-th February election and unfortunately Israel failed this test. The Israeli Arab community was pressured and divided in order to don’t have independent candidates, an important number of Arab activist have being imprison or pressured , as a result the Arab community refused to participate in this crucial election being denied a basic right of a democratic society : to participate at electoral process. For Israel also the political class doesn’t offer any solution. Kadima party of Tzipi Livni launched two failed wars in Lebanon and Gaza being responsible for the violence in Palestinian territory, for the failed peace process in the Middle East it is hard to believe that they will become a peace party in the future. The Likud party is known for his opposition to any concession to Arab community or to Palestinian state, Benjamin Netanyahu promised to topple Hamas in Gaza, to attack Iran and to pressure military Syria, an agenda of war and terror in the Middle East. The new born of the Israel policy the Israel Beytenu party wants to expel Arab community still living in Israel, to further separate Palestinian Territory from Israel, to confiscate land from Arab community and to give it to Israeli settlers. Finally but not the last on war promises is the Labor Party chaired by Ehud Barrack , the architect of the Israel success in the War in Gaza finalized with at least 470 children being killed and 500 woman’s . Ehud barrack goes to the polls shrouded in this flag of an unnecessary war made only for gaining votes.
Isareli elections or warmonger competition ?
This is the spectacle of Israel election in 2009, a spectacle that disappoints even the Israeli public opinion and promised only new tension in the region and not any solution. A failed opportunity for Israel, Palestine and Middle East.
Palestine, bitter victory.
For Palestine the war has prove to be a bitter victory, with more the 1. 500 billion dollars destruction in property, more the 5.000 wounded and more the 1.300 killed, there are not too many reason to celebrate. But there are a few gained points. First of all the name of Palestine is one more time on everybody lips , international community , scholars, international organizations everyone is concentrating their efforts to build a new and prosperous Palestine. The Nakba, the Palestinian tragedy of 1948, born from the imperialism of United States and Great Britain must be finally resolved and Palestinian people must regain their country. The war proven the Palestine must be INDEPENDENT NOW and the new state must be a valid one with a territorial connection between Gaza and West Bank and with the capital in East Jerusalem. The immediately redrew of all military forces and colonies and settlements of Israel from the illegal occupied territories after the 1967 war. Democratic elections must be held in Palestine in order to have a legitimate government and a legitimate president. Only democratic elections as soon as possible could make a new and legitimate authority to build the independent Palestine. Under the ruble of Gaza, Hamas obtained a new legitimacy, not only from wining democratic elections but now from protecting the people, fighting for survival of Gaza, building an armed force strong enough to stand up to Israel formidable forces and to keep Israel army out of Gaza city for three weeks. This legitimacy of national resistance and of military victory, that made Hamas the representative of people of Gaza, was proven by the Doha Forum, when the majority of Arab states, united in their recognition of Hamas, as a part of the solution in Gaza and Palestine, offered the international recognition to Hamas. From this moment Hamas has proven not to be a terrorist organization but a democratic, military and political movement with a clear project for reforming Palestine. The legitimacy of Hamas as a representative of Palestine cannot be put under question. In conclusion after 23 days of war when Palestine not only resisted militarily but had also win morally and offered to the Arab world the possibility of being united in front of all the challenges of XXI century. But is a bitter victory, that more than 1.300 dead give their life for a new Palestine. Let’s not let this sacrifice to be in vain.
